Sucks hand frequently: hunger or pain

Babies will suck to comfort themselves. Infants have few strategies to help them co-opt the adult into doing something to help them when they are hungry or in pain. Crying and sucking are indicators. If baby cries and you feed him and he settles – it was hunger. If you feed him and he remains unsettled, it is most likely pain or discomfort. Check for postural turn, tight TMJ, gastric reflux and treat accordingly.
